Let's start with what you can get for zero dollars. Because honestly, the free options in 2026 are better than most paid platforms were two years ago. I covered free options more thoroughly in my free AI girlfriend apps guide, but here's the cost-focused summary.

1. Pi by Inflection AI

Still my #1 free pick and it's not close. Pi has zero premium tiers, zero message limits, zero paywalls. The conversation quality is genuinely good for supportive, thoughtful chat. I've been using it since mid-2025 and haven't hit a single restriction.

The catch? Pi won't do roleplay, won't do romance, won't pretend to be a fictional character. It's a supportive companion, not a virtual partner. If that's what you want, perfect. If you want something more, keep reading.

2. Character.AI Free Tier

Unlimited messages, thousands of community characters, surprisingly strong roleplay. The downside is queue wait times during peak hours (usually 7-11pm). I've waited anywhere from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. Annoying but tolerable if you're not in a rush.

Here's what surprised me: the free tier character quality on Character.AI is better than the paid tier on several competitors. You're getting excellent conversation quality at no cost. The filters are strict though, which drives a lot of users toward paid NSFW alternatives.

3. Meta AI and ChatGPT (Limited Companion Use)

These are free. They're also not really built as companions. Meta AI feels like talking to a helpful search engine. ChatGPT can sort of roleplay if you prompt it carefully, but it constantly breaks character to remind you it's an AI. I wouldn't recommend either as a primary companion, but they're worth mentioning because people ask about them constantly.

4. Chai Free Tier

About 70 messages per day for free. That's enough for casual use. The character variety is decent and it scratches the roleplay itch without paying. But 70 messages goes faster than you think, especially in longer conversations. I burned through my daily limit in about 25 minutes once.

Cost-Per-Hour: The Metric That Actually Matters

Monthly subscription prices are misleading. What actually matters is how much you pay per hour of meaningful interaction. I tracked this across 3 months and then 6 months of real usage data.

Look at that CrushOn number. $4.17 per hour. That's more than a Netflix binge and arguably less entertaining. I included it because I want to be honest about the platforms where I wasted money.

Character.AI Plus at $0.12/hour is absurdly good value for anyone who chats daily. Pi at literally $0 is obviously the winner if you don't need roleplay or romance features.

Biggest Pricing Changes Since 2025

If you read my original comparison, here's what shifted:

• SpicyChat added a $4.99 Basic tier. This didn't exist in October 2025. It's a reasonable entry point for NSFW content that wasn't available before. They also reduced the free tier from 150 to 100 messages per day.
• Chai tightened its free tier. Free messages dropped from roughly 100/day to about 70. Still usable, but the squeeze is real.
• Dream Companion launched. Didn't exist when I wrote the original post. It's mid-tier pricing ($11.99-$44.99) with mid-tier quality.
• Replika's annual plan stayed at $69.99. Given everything else went up, this is actually relatively better value than it was in 2025.
• Character.AI Plus held at $9.99. No price increase despite model improvements. Respect.

My Spending Recommendations by Budget

After 14 months and $500+, here's what I'd tell a friend who asked "what should I actually spend?"

My current monthly spend is $24.98. Character.AI Plus ($9.99) and Replika Pro annual (works out to $14.99 if you count the upfront cost monthly, or $5.83 on the annual rate). Down from $85 at peak. Three Things I Got Wrong in My Original Post

I want to be upfront about this because I think honesty matters more than pretending I nailed everything the first time.

First, I underrated Nomi AI. I barely mentioned it in October. After three months of daily use, it's become one of my favorites. The memory system is genuinely a generation ahead of most competitors.

Second, I said SpicyChat was almost unusable. The 2026 updates made it passable. Still not great, but I was too harsh.

Third, I didn't emphasize the annual plan savings enough. Replika Pro at $5.83/month is a completely different value proposition than Replika Pro at $19.99/month.
