Why I Went Back to SpicyChat

Last October, I wrote a SpicyChat AI review that was, let's be honest, pretty brutal. I gave it a 4 out of 10. Called the memory "embarrassing," the pricing aggressive, and the privacy situation a red flag. My follow-up two weeks later wasn't much kinder. I basically told people to go use CrushOn instead and moved on with my life.

What Actually Changed in 2026

I want to give credit where it's due, because SpicyChat clearly listened to feedback (mine or otherwise). Here's what's different since my October review:

Response times dropped significantly. Back in October, I clocked responses at 4-15 seconds, which made conversations feel like texting someone who keeps putting their phone down. In my March 2026 testing, responses on the Premium tier came in at 3-8 seconds. Still not instant, but the difference is noticeable. This was my biggest complaint in October 2025. The characters felt flat. Responses were generic. Everything read like it came from the same template with different names swapped in. So, did SpicyChat fix this?

Sort of.

The baseline conversation quality is noticeably better than six months ago. Characters stay on topic more consistently. The responses feel slightly less formulaic. I tested a medieval fantasy character that actually maintained period-appropriate language for an entire 45-minute session, which would've been impossible with the old system.

But here's where I have to be real: I've spent the past year testing every major AI companion app on the market. And when you put SpicyChat side by side with CrushOn.AI, the gap is still obvious. Now, when you open a chat, the AI generates a summary of your past interactions and feeds it back into the context. The failure cases are frustrating though. Long conversations (200+ messages in a single thread) still cause the AI to lose the plot. And the summaries occasionally get details wrong, which creates confusion rather than continuity.

Is SpicyChat Safe? (2026 Update)

The new California and New York AI companion regulations that went into effect in 2026 forced every platform in this space to get more transparent about data practices. SpicyChat responded, but how much changed in practice is debatable.

The good: SpicyChat now offers two-factor authentication, which it lacked when I first reviewed it. They published a clearer (not clear, clearer) data handling page that outlines what they store and for how long. And they added an option to request full data deletion, which I tested. It took 11 days to process, which isn't fast, but at least the option exists.

The bad: their privacy policy still uses vague language about "third-party service providers" who may access your data. No specifics on who these parties are or what they do with your conversations. For a platform where people share extremely personal and intimate content, this is a problem. I don't know if SpicyChat sells data. I don't know if they don't. And that ambiguity is exactly the issue.

My safety recommendations haven't changed since October:

• Use a burner email address for your account
• Never share real personal information (name, location, workplace)
• Enable two-factor authentication (new option)
• Treat every message as potentially permanent and public
• Don't reuse passwords from other accounts

If privacy is your top concern, honestly, Muah AI does a much better job here. They offer end-to-end encryption and a clearer data policy. SpicyChat isn't dangerous (as far as I can tell), but it's not earning trust either.

SpicyChat vs the Competition in 2026

The NSFW AI companion market in 2026 is nothing like it was when I started testing these platforms. There are more options, better options, and more regulation. So where does SpicyChat fit?

Still not a fair comparison, but people keep asking. Character.AI doesn't allow NSFW content at all, so if that's what you want, the decision is already made. On pure conversation quality, Character.AI is leagues ahead. Better memory, better personalities, better creative writing. It's free for basic use. This is the comparison that actually matters. Both platforms target the same audience with similar features. In my CrushOn review, I rated it a 7/10. CrushOn wins on conversation quality, pricing ($9.99 vs $14.95), and character personality depth. SpicyChat wins on character library size and (barely) on its new mobile experience. For most people, CrushOn is still the better pick. That hasn't changed.

SpicyChat vs Candy AI

Different beasts entirely. Candy AI is all about visuals. Image generation, Live Action video, avatar customization. SpicyChat is text-only. If you want a visual AI companion, Candy AI wins without question. If you only care about text chat and want a massive character library, SpicyChat has more options. SpicyChat vs DreamGF and Muah AI

DreamGF occupies a similar space to Candy AI. Visual-first, with image generation as its main draw. SpicyChat and DreamGF barely overlap in terms of what they do well. Muah AI is the more interesting comparison. It's newer, cheaper, and has better privacy features. Conversation quality is roughly on par with SpicyChat, maybe slightly below, but the privacy advantages are significant. If data security is on your radar at all, look at Muah AI first.
