What AI companion apps should I avoid?
Based on my testing, avoid platforms with unclear privacy policies, aggressive paywalls with no free trial, or those that spam your email. Eva AI felt like it was designed to extract money rather than provide companionship. ChatFAI is gimmicky and shallow. Some platforms I quit entirely - I have written about those experiences in detail. Always start with free tiers before committing money.
Final Verdict: Which AI Companion Should You Actually Use?
After testing 25 platforms, spending $437, and having more conversations with AI than I probably should have, here's what I'd tell a friend who asked me which AI companion app to download right now:
Start with Character.AI (free) and Pi AI (free) simultaneously. Character.AI for variety and entertainment, Pi for when you want something more emotionally grounded. Between those two free options, you'll know within a week whether you prefer creative roleplay or empathetic conversation.
If you want to pay for one subscription: Replika if emotional connection is your priority, Kindroid if you want maximum customization. Those are the two paid experiences I think are genuinely worth the money.
If you already use ChatGPT: You don't necessarily need a separate companion app. ChatGPT's recent features have closed the gap significantly. It won't replace a dedicated companion app for emotional depth, but it's "good enough" for many people.
The platforms that didn't make my top 10? Some of them will improve. Grok is one I'm watching closely — xAI has the resources to make it a real contender. But right now, the gap between the elite tier and everything below it is significant.
